Goals:
-
Our goal is for intervention students to “close the gap” in their learning and be successful in their grade level classroom within 12 -24 weeks.
-
As a team we facilitate professional development for staff, look at research in the education of mathematics, and track data school wide.
-
Consult and support teachers in helping all students grow as mathematicians
Intervention Programs Used:
As interventionists we use a variety of resources. Our main resources for intervention and professional training is in Math Recovery and the Bridges Intervention Curriculum. Math Intervention is designed to assess where students are currently in their mathematical thinking, diagnose problem areas, and create a plan for filling any gaps in mathematical understanding. Math recovery and Bridges Intervention focuses on conceptual understanding of math, and pushes students to discuss and verbalize their strategies and thinking when approaching math work.
We blend this training, with our own professional resources and input from classroom teachers.
How to Qualify:
Students qualify for math intervention in a variety of ways. Teachers, interventionists and administrators work together to analyze data, share observations and make decisions on students as individuals. The baseline is a student who consistently scores in the lowest 30% on his/her MAP tests. Other factors including classroom performance, teacher observation, and standardized math assessments are used in making any final decisions regarding qualifications for math intervention.
How to best help your child:
More than any website, talking with your child about math, playing board games and focusing on some of the themes highlighted in the document linked below would be the most beneficial for building a strong number sense.
