Reflection Sheets and ODRs
What to do When Students are Not Practicing Appropriate Behaviors
Our job at Stormonth is to create a learning environment where kids feel safe and respected. All staff is responsible to review and re-teach the classroom and school expectations frequently throughout the day.
When students need reminders about the safe, respectful and responsible behaviors expected at Stormonth, a Reflection Sheet or an Office Disciplinary Referral, ODR, may be made by ANY member of the staff (custodians, bus drivers, aides, teachers, support staff, cafeteria workers, or substitute teachers) for any area of the school or school playground and bus. The behaviors that staff members may refer students for are outlined in the Stormonth Minor/Major Behavior Classification and will be posted in each classroom.
Reflection Sheet (Minor Behaviors)
A Reflection Sheet is for any student who has made a choice that falls under ‘Minor Behavior’ in the Stormonth Behavior Classification (see above). Minor behaviors are to be teacher-managed in the classroom or wherever the behavior occurred.
After 2 re-directions or re-teaches when the behavior occurs, staff will tell student to begin filling out a “Reflection Sheet”. These are designed to guide them to take responsibility for and process what happened, and make a plan for 1) a better choice next time and 2) how to fix the problem.
Student is responsible to begin this process as developmentally appropriately as they can (even if this simply means writing their name at the top for younger students). When the teacher has a free moment - ideally within 15 minutes of issuing the Reflection Sheet - teacher will confer with the student and assist with completing the rest of the Reflection Sheet. The sheet will be a carbon-copy - the top page will be sent home for a parent signature, and the bottom will be given to the School Counselor for data tracking.
Consequences for Minor behaviors should be clear, appropriate for the behavior and may be implemented at the discretion of the teacher or staff member. A consequence is NOT the Reflection Sheet itself, but may include: a time out, loss of privilege, parent contact, a written apology, and/or face-to-face apology.
Paper copies of Reflection Sheets will be available for all staff, including specialists, assistants, and will be used in the lunchroom and on the playground. Completed Reflection Sheets will be given to the classroom teacher ASAP. The top white copy goes home, and the yellow copy goes to the office for data entry into SWIS.
ODR - Office Disciplinary Referral (Major Behaviors)
An ODR, or Office Disciplinary Referral, can be made for any student who has made a choice that falls under “Major Behavior” in the Stormonth Behavior Classification. Major behaviors are more severe and students should be sent to the Office for the principal to investigate and determine an appropriate consequence.
An ODR (Office Disciplinary Referral) Form should be written by the person with knowledge of the behavioral infraction. If the Principal is not available, office staff will best determine who next will handle the situation - 1) School Counselor, 2) School Psychologist or 3) Special Ed Coordinator.
The Principal or other designated staff member will determine the consequence or best course of action based on the student, the behavior, and the context in which it occurred. The ODR form is a “triplicate” form and each layer will be a communication tool for what occurred. The TOP copy (green) will be sent home for parent signature, MIDDLE copy (blue) - school office records, BOTTOM (yellow) - return to referring teacher, then to classroom teacher for record-keeping and communication.
Students with behavior intervention plans written in an IEP will be handled according to the legal documentation. (See case manager with questions)
