What to Expect?
Second grade is a year of gaining independence. Students transition from learning to read to reading to learn. We use the workshop model to support each child’s individual reading needs.
In writing, students begin to gain an understanding in learning to write for specific audiences. During the year, students write opinion letters, lab reports, poetry pieces and personal narratives.
Students learn to communicate their math reasoning and self-select individual math strategies to gain a better understanding of math concepts.
Also, in second grade we focus on community throughout the year. We begin the year recognizing our own classroom communities and celebrating each student’s unique talents and interests. This is a year of recognizing the benefits of working collaboratively with others and learning from others. We also provide field trip experiences to enhance student’s understandings of the local community through theater performances, walking tours and park visits. Not only is second grade a year of independence, but a year of social, emotional and academic growth.
