Gifted and Talented
Where ideas are hatching? and children are exploring.
Enrichment opportunities are offered to students exhibiting high performance capability in intellectual, creative, artistic, leadership or specific academic areas. While students are not formally identified as gifted until the end of fourth grade, many opportunities exist in order for students to fully develop their potential. These classes may take the form of enrichment workshops, independent projects, curricular extensions and other assorted pull out or whole class courses.
Music
Kindergarten children come to music class once a week, while students in grades one through four have music class twice weekly. In music classes children sing, play classroom instruments, move, dance, listen to a variety of musical styles from many cultures, become literate musicians, and hopefully develop an appreciation of and love for music that will last a lifetime.
Library Media Center
During library class time, students learn
- about wonderful books, a variety of genres, and outstanding authors and illustrators.
- how to locate and use information from resources such as: nonfiction books, encyclopedias, atlases, almanacs, the Internet, CD-ROM materials, magazines, dictionaries, maps, globes, and more!
Students also have the opportunity to check out books each scheduled library class time as well as throughout the regular school day. Link to Stormonth LMC Webpage.
Physical Education
We believe that Physical Education is a phase of education which makes unique and important contributions to the total development of all students. A healthy body and sound mind complement each other and are frameworks for optimum mental effectiveness. Movement begins before birth and continues throughout life. It is the children's way of learning about themselves and the world around them. It is their way of learning by doing. A Chinese proverb states, "I hear and forget; I see and I remember; I do and I understand." We are the part of education that MOVES!
Our program includes lessons and activities that should enhance your child's skills in motor development as well as contribute to self-esteem, positive interpersonal relationships, responsible behavior and independence.
Spanish World Language
¡Say HOLA to Spanish!
Welcome to the Fox Point-Bayside World Language Program. Stormonth Elementary offers Spanish to all students in K4 through 4th grade levels. Twice each week, students practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing in the target language. They learn to make connections and comparisons to other disciplines, while exploring cultures and communities around the world. Songs, storybooks, games, and thematic units create a fun and friendly learning environment where students can discover meanings and express themselves. The emphasis of the program is communication, to get students speaking another language. Hopefully, this initial exposure to Spanish and cultural acceptance builds the foundation for future language study and lifelong learning.
