Academic Expectations:
ELA:
English Language Arts offers students the opportunity to learn 7th grade reading, writing, language, speaking and listening standards from the Wisconsin Standards through a workshop model. Students will practice the skills necessary to become a critical thinker, collaborator, and communicator in the 21st century. Through focused units of study, students will explore narrative, informative, and argumentative writing as well as poetry. Students will continue to develop and strengthen their reading skills while working with a variety of texts and genres. Each assignment develops real-world writing skills as well as the social skills required to become successful in everyday life.
Math:
Students follow a rigorous math program as outlined in the Wisconsin Standards for mathematics. Students will be engaged in active learning, differentiated instruction, and cooperative and problem-based learning. In-depth instruction will be provided to enable students to develop and master content. Students will have the expectation of proficiency with the following topics: integers, rational numbers, expression and equations, inequalities, ratios, proportions, percents, scale drawing, circles and area, surface area, volume, probability and statistics.
Reading:
Students will continue to develop and strengthen their reading skills while working with a variety of texts and genres. Students will learn to apply “before reading”, “during reading”, and “after reading” strategies. In addition, students will be asked to select, interpret, analyze, classify, summarize and synthesize information as a way of improving critical thinking skills. The curriculum for this class is aligned to The Common Core Standards for Reading and utilizes the workshop method.
Science:
Students engage in the process of science through a hands-on approach that allows them to be scientists and engineers. Students use both the scientific method and the engineering design process to integrate content knowledge and critical thinking as they answer questions, solve problems, and create models. Reading and study skills are also incorporated into the units of study, which may include: Discovering Matter, Energy and Earth Materials, Glaciers and Earth’s Past, Cell Functions, Cell Division, Rocky Shores, Environmental Science, Mechanical Engineering, and Communication Technology.
Social Studies:
The seventh graders explore world geography. Students examine how the five themes of Geography - movement, region, human and environmental interactions, location and place - influence our lives and those of a global society. Reading, writing, interpretation of primary sources, hands-on activities and research skills are incorporated into the units of study.
World Languages: Spanish
Spanish 7 is articulated with Nicolet High School's first semester of Spanish 1. Building upon language sills from 5th and 6th grade Spanish, students will acquire novice Spanish skills including: formal/informal greetings, asking and answering about likes, dislikes, and skills describing one's schedule and classroom at school, expressing their emotions, sharing their favorite breakfast and lunch foods, and describing one's family.
Key skills include: interpreting and communicating through means of authentic readings, listening, speaking, and writing.
Units will teach students to recognize and appreciate cultural products from diverse Spanish-speaking communities.
World Languages: French
French 7 is articulated with Nicolet High School's first semester of French 1.
