Academic Expectations:
ELA:
Sixth grade students participate in an ELA workshop block for English and reading. Using the Units of Study curriculum, students explore reading and writing in a variety of different genres. Through class-led and self-selected essays, short stories, novels, and poems, students study and analyze text according to elements included in the Wisconsin State Standards. In addition, students use mentor texts and frameworks to learn and practice a variety of narrative and informational writing structures. The sixth grade ELA experience strives to create a love and appreciation for the written word, and its essential place in every facet of today's society.
Math:
Sixth graders learn about numerical expressions and factors, fractions and decimals, ratios and rates, percents, algebraic expressions and properties, equations, area, surface area and volume, integers and the coordinate plane, statistical measure and data display.
Reading:
Students study a variety of literature including genres like realistic fiction, narrative nonfiction, and poetry. They research topics to gather information for essays, and they write various types of pieces including literature analysis, poems, and biographical essays. Self-selected novels as well as assigned books are a part of the daily curriculum.
Science:
Students engage in the process of science through a hands-on approach that allows them to be scientists and engineers. Students use both the scientific method and the engineering design process to integrate content knowledge and critical thinking as they answer questions, solve problems, and create models. Reading and study skills are also incorporated into the units of study, which include: Gravity and Motion, Atoms and Molecules, Satellites, Climate and Human Activity, Landforms, Biodiversity, Cells to Systems, and Forests.

The sixth graders explore ancient world cultures including their religions, where they settled and why they chose those places. We begin with hominins and move through Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, Greece and Rome. Students will use the C.E.R. (claim, evidence, reasoning) writing method throughout the year. This allows students to use documentation to prove thier historical claims.
