Academic Expectations:
Math:
Students will learn how to apply mathematical skills to real life situations through a workshop model. This type of model includes Number Corner, mini lessons, differentiated small group instruction, workplaces, and independent work. The fifth graders learn multiple strategies to enhance their mathematical conceptualization. Topics covered will include addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with fractions, mixed numbers, whole numbers and decimals, operations and word problems, algebra, patterns and coordinate graphs, measurement and geometry.
ELA:
Throughout the year, students will engage in the Lucy Calkins Readers/Writers Workshop Model. Reading and writing units will alternate, though both skills are embedded and incorporated in each unit. The workshop model focuses on students thinking more deeply about their books while reading at their level and increasing their volume and elaboration of writing and enhancing their use of craft moves. Within this model, students will participate in mini-lessons, small group instruction, as well as individual conferring sessions to aid in their personal growth. Various topics that are covered include the following: fiction, nonfiction, historical book clubs, research-based argument, memoir, literary essay, and arumentative essay. Grammar, conventions, parts of speech, and mechanics are learned through Patterns of Power, which is integrated into our reading/writing lessons.
Science:
Students engage in the process of science through a hands-on approach that allows them to be scientists and engineers. Students use both the scientific process and the engineering design process to integrate content knowledge and critical thinking as they answer questions, solve problems, and create models. Reading and study skills are also incorporated into the units of study, which include: Matter in Motion, Earth Materials, Matter and Energy Cycles, Energy and Forces on Earth, Matter and Electricity, Matter and Sound, Matter and Light.
Social Studies:
Fifth grade social studies focuses on US History through Early Westward Expansion. Students will examine how historical American social, political, economic, and cultural values have influenced our lives in America today. Reading, writing, interpretation of primary sources, hands-on activities and research skills are incorporated into the units of study which include: Early European Explorers, The Original Thirteen Colonies, The American Revolution, The Making of Our Government, and Early Westward Expansion.
