How Grading Changes in 5th Grade
As a staff we work hard to be informative about any practice or procedure that may differ from your child’s elementary experience. Our grading practices here at Bayside are another example of change that impacts your incoming 5th grade child next year. We separate student grading into two categories. The first is Academic Mastery, and the second is Effort/Schoolmanship.
The purpose of grading is for a teacher to be able to communicate and guide a student (and the student’s parent/guardian) in subject matter objectives. Grades should demonstrate the level of mastery reached by a student in pre-established content standards and objectives. Our school district standards, which guide teacher instruction, are aligned with Wisconsin State Standards and/or new Common Core Standards in each applicable subject area. This includes academic subjects as well as specials classes.
Below is an explanation of where achievement and a student’s daily performance experiences may fall. Each of these are covered in the two separate grading categories.
